Salvador Dali Biography

Born Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí Domčnech Marquis of Pubol in the town of Figueras, near Barcelona, Spain, Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was encouraged by his family to pursue art. In 1921 he enrolled at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he was first exposed to the avant guard movement and lifestyle that eventually resulted in his expulsion. At that time he was influenced by Sigmund Freud's book, "the interpretation of dreams", and the French surrealist movement. In the 1930s his surrealist paintings gained notoriety in the United States and Europe. During World War II Dali fled the war to the United States, returning after the war to Spain. In the 1950s he painted a series of religious works in a more classical manner. Towards the end of his life he became quite prolific, returning to his surrealistic background.
