"Sunset Dreams" by Robert Atkinson Fox (1860-1935). A charming lithograph from the 1920s by prolific artist R Atkinson Fox. A great example of his work, the muted colors and soft pastel tones give this print an inherently peaceful quality. A young woman gazes dreamily out into the distance in a setting very reminiscent of Maxfield Parrish. The print is in excellent condition and the full spectrum of colors is apparent. It is still in the original 1920s frame, which shows age appropriate wear and patina. The print has the appropriate markings, R Atkinson Fox in the lower right and copyright Borin manufacturing company, Chicago, in the lower left. The overall dimensions of the framed print are 13.5 by 19.5 inches.

Price: $95

Robert Atkinson Fox Biography

Robert Atkinson Fox (1860-1935) was born on December 11, 1860, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There is little information available about his early years, but we do know that he started the study art early on. As a teenager he left home to study with John Wesley Bridgman, a noted portrait painter. He gained a measure of success and notoriety as a portrait painter, painting portraits of such dignitaries as Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and Sir John McDonald. In his 20s he traveled to Europe to study art were he was influenced by the Barbizon school in Paris. Sometime in the 1880s he returned to the United States to New York City. Around the turn-of-the-century he moved to Philadelphia, which would serve as the hub of his future business dealings. In 1903 he married a woman almost 20 years his junior, and together they had eight children. This began his most prolific period, working closely with calendar, printing, and picture-frame companies. He eventually moved to Chicago where he died in 1935 after several years of poor health.
